What-to-Wear Style Guide | Kate Montaner Photography | Northern Virginia Photographer

Choosing outfits for your photo session

may feel like a daunting task,

but it doesn’t have to be!

What-to-Wear-Style-Guide-Kate-Montaner-Photography

l  have created this “What to Wear Style Guide” to provide you with some tried and true suggestions and tips to ensure you are looking and feeling the most confident and beautiful for your session.

Matching is out- Coordinating is in!             Coordinating color is what really brings wardrobe together.  Stick to neutral  tones, and versions of primary colors. For example, Red (maroon, brick), Yellow (mustard) and Blue (navy, royal). I suggest sticking to three colors total including an accent color. Please avoid large logos,
graphics, characters, and fluorescent colors.

Layer! Layer! Layer!
Layers and accessories add dimension and depth to your photos, and are also a fantastic way to tie in outfits and colors.

For example:

  • Fall/Winter: cardigans, belts, scarves, hats blazers, etc.

  • Spring/Summer: layer a dress with a cute belt and pendant necklace

Dress for the weather and be flexible.         If your child is too cold or hot, he or she won’t be happy. The same goes for mom and dad. Wear what you feel good in! If you aren’t comfortable in what you’ve chosen for pictures, it will show.  Also, know your body type and what styles will flatter your figure. Start with one outfit you really like and build from it for everyone else.

Let your Personalities Show!
The most important part of putting together outfits is allowing each personality to shine. Have fun with it!

Here is a great example of an outfit for a woman.  The black and white polka dot blouse acts a little peek-a-boo under a gorgeous mustard blazer with amazing texture.  Pair this with a slim fit dark rinse jean and cute flats or even a riding boot.  Both the scarf and bracelet tie in the colors.  A matte shade of navy nail polish adds a chic and modern touch to complete the outfit.

There might not be anything I love more than a little girl in a dress with knee socks and Mary Janes.  This outfit does not have to look too classic if you add fun touches such as these cute brick/orange fox knee socks or a dress with zipper accents.  The fur est gives a nice texture that will photograph very well while also keeping the core nice and warm.  (for colder weather, switch to a long sleeved dress). The mustard hair barrette rounds out the ensemble and ties in mom’s color theme.

Working from the outfit chosen for mom, here is a great example of something dad could wear to complement her color scheme.  Pants should be a slim fit (too baggy ends up looking sloppy) and a classic silhouette flattering.   The navy cardigan over a plaid oxford shirt is a nice layering touch and sure to make dad feel comfortable.  Extra points for some burnt orange or mustard trouser socks or a wool cap!

Continuing with the navy/mustard theme, here we can have some fun and add a pop of color with burnt orange in the vest, hat and shirt. The mustard converse are super fun and playful and tie in mom’s blazer. and really, what shoe could be more timeless than something James Dean wore?

Looking to buy some new clothing for your session but not sure
where to start?

Here are a few of my favorite places to find unique and camera-ready pieces that can take your photos from ordinary to EXTRAORDINARY!

Whatever your price point, I am confident you will find
something that suits your family’s personality and style.

Anthropologie

This store has some of the most beautiful clothing with lovely details and textures.  Not to miss are the dresses, jackets, and jewelry.  This shop is womens’ clothing only.

Zara

Zara is one of my favorite stores for children’s clothing. It is a European brand, and you can really see that influence in their kids’ line.  Everything is incredibly sweet and timeless.  Tysons Corner has a store, and you can also shop online.

H&M

This store has really great pieces that are on trend (but not over the top) and will not break the bank.  I love this store for outfits for the entire family.  This is a great spot for shoes and accessories as well.

One of my clients who always seems to know exactly how to style her family!  Even their little puppy seemed to coordinate at this session! :)
